Spam trap

A spam trap is an email address that never asked for mail, run by a provider or blocklist to catch senders with poor list practices.

Pristine traps were never used by a person and only appear where addresses are scraped. Recycled traps are abandoned addresses that were reactivated after bouncing for a long time. Typo traps sit at misspellings of popular domains.

Mail to a trap is proof the list wasn't built on consent or wasn't cleaned. Hits can lead to blocklist listings. Confirmed opt-in and removing addresses that hard bounce or never engage keep you clear.
