Self-hosted email vs SuperMailOS

The honest math, from a company that runs mail servers.

This comparison is unusual: SuperMailOS is self-hosted email, operated for you. We run our own mail infrastructure — the server, the DNS zones, the reputation. So this isn't “cloud vs hobbyist”; it's who does the work.

Where self-hosting wins

  • Total control. Every knob, every log, every policy. For some operators that's the point, not the cost.
  • marginal cost near zero. Add an address, a domain, a mailbox — it's all just config on hardware you already run.
  • Learning. Running a mail server teaches you more about email than any vendor ever will. ( We know — it's how this product exists. )

Where SuperMailOS wins

  • Your weekends back. The stack — server, DNS zone generation, TLS, queue, reputation — is operated by the people who built it.
  • Warm start on reputation. New IPs start distrusted; ours are warmed and watched, with per-domain visibility.
  • A product on top. The Gmail-like inbox, role aliases, team workspaces, one-click DNS on supported registrars — the parts you'd never get around to building.

Which one fits you

If you love running infrastructure and mail is a hobby: self-host, genuinely. If mail is load-bearing for your business and your weekends have better uses — that's what we sell. Either way, our guides ( written from running the servers ) are free: start with the DNS records guide.

FAQ

Is SuperMailOS just a wrapper around a self-hosted server?

It's our own mail infrastructure with a product on top: managed zones, warmup, DMARC parsing, a real inbox, team workflows. The difference between a server and a service is who's paged at 3 a.m.

Can I export everything if I leave?

Standard IMAP access means your mail is always portable to any client or provider — no lock-in gymnastics.

Is self-hosted deliverability doomed?

No — but it's earned slowly ( warmup, hygiene, patience ) and lost quickly. Managed hosting exists because most businesses undervalue their weekends until the first delisting.
