# Migrate your existing mail

You can move to SuperMailOS without a gap in service and without your senders noticing. The trick is ordering: bring your addresses and old mail across *first*, and only switch DNS once everything is in place.

## Migrate without downtime

1.  **Recreate your mailboxes.** Add your domain and create mailboxes matching your current addresses. Leave your **MX unchanged** for now, so mail keeps arriving at your old provider while you prepare.
2.  **Connect both sides over IMAP.** Add the old and new mailboxes to a desktop mail client, or use an IMAP-to-IMAP sync tool.SuperMailOS’s IMAP settings are in [connect a mail app](/docs/connect-mail-app); your old provider will have its own.
3.  **Copy your mail across.** Copy folders from the old mailbox into the new one. Everything moves over and nothing is removed from the old side, so it stays a safe fallback. If a guided import is available in your workspace, use it; otherwise any IMAP-to-IMAP copy works.
4.  **Cut DNS across.** Point your MX at SuperMailOS and update SPF (see [DNS setup](/docs/dns-setup)). New mail now arrives here, and DKIM signing, DMARC reporting and warm-up are already running from the first message you send.
5.  **Decommission the old account.** Keep it a little while to catch anything sent during propagation, then close it.

## Why this order matters

Because you copy mail before switching MX, there’s never a window where messages fall between two providers. And because authentication is provisioned from the mail server’s zone *before* the cutover, you skip the common self-migration mistake: switching first, then sending while SPF and DKIM are still missing.

## Keep your addresses and aliases

Recreate role addresses like `hello@` and `support@` as free aliases delivering into whichever mailbox should receive them — they cost nothing and are unlimited on every plan. Your senders keep writing to the same addresses throughout.
